Spectrum OC16 December Spotlights
The football season is over. School is out for break. And most of us
(except the person writing this lol) will be on winter vacation.
As we get ready to hit the second half of the school year the
best ballers from around the state are gearing up for what will no
doubt be a memorable year in girls and boys basketball. Here’s a
quick peek on who to watch out for…
BOYS: DAMIEN MONARCHS
They were the talk of the state last season. Damien dominated
Division 2 last season with a stifling defense and one of the most
explosive offenses in the ILH. Led by Jake Holtz (Sr) and Hayden
Bayudan (Soph), the Monarchs return a bevy of big bodies and
sharpshooters in 2019-2020. But with the jump up to Division 1
this season, the question will be, can they hang with some of the
“big dogs” of the division and steal a spot in the state tournament.
GIRLS: KONAWAENA WILDCATS
The 9-time HHSAA D1 champions came up short last season,
losing in the semifinals to eventual state champion Iolani. 2019-2020
brings the same steady batch of highly skilled talents back to the floor.
With no seniors on the team last year, Konawaena has filled its roster
with a whopping eight players this year. Led by Caiyle Kaupu, the Wildcats
have won three of their first four games of the preseason with Kaupu
averaging 15.0 points an outing. They don’t turnover the ball. They shoot
well. They’re well coached. Don’t be surprised if you see these ladies
in February battling for a 10th state crown.
Thank you again for making our 31st season of Prep Football on
Spectrum OC16 / XCast a memorable one. We hope you have a
wonderful holiday season and a safe new year.
Until next time…
Girl Power On The Water
Host Korie Harvey
With the recent rise in popularity of women’s surfing,
Spectrum OC16’s “FlHi Girlz” takes you on a wild ride each week
with features on the most exciting up and coming female athletes
in the water and highlights from the hottest ocean and action sports
events both in Hawaii and beyond our shores.
“FlHi Girlz” is the creation of “Banzai” Betty Depolito. As a champion
surfer from California, she came to the Islands in the 70’s
to compete in the Smirnoff Sunset Pro and loved it so much,
she decided to call Hawaii home. Over the years, Betty has made it
a mission to further the sport of women’s surfing and has made
a powerful impact through competing as a professional surfer,
organizing and judging meets and as a television producer. Besides surfing,
she promotes virtually all water sports, including longboarding,
body boarding and standup paddling, which are all events
featured in the Pipeline Women’s Pro that she produces annually.
“FlHi Girlz” premiered on OC16 in June of 2008 and has shined
a spotlight on women’s action sports with a heavy emphasis
on surfing and other water sports. It also lets you get to
know the athletes you see in the water, through interviews and
exclusive action footage. An accomplished videographer, Betty was
also a one of the first women to shoot footage while in the water.
The show’s host for its entire history is the effervescent Kori Harvey.
An elementary school teacher in Mililani, she met Betty while
surfing and her outgoing, energetic personality convinced Betty
that she was the right person to host the show.
After over a decade on the air, the show is going strong and continues to be a
showcase for the phenomenal women athletes in Hawaii and beyond.
